Unveiling CyberGhost

Let’s unveil CyberGhost!

“Unseen, unheard, undetected – CyberGhost.”

CyberGhost’s mission is to make you invisible while browsing the web. Their goal is to safeguard your online presence, ensuring that you leave no trace of your activities and that your movements are never recorded.

It is a popular vpn (Virtual Private Network) service that provides users with increased privacy and security while browsing the internet.

VPN aficionados often get into deep debates about the merits of jurisdiction and country of origin. This is because some countries have data sharing, retention, and discovery laws — and others don’t. For those people who have a strong reason to protect their tracks (or just the inherent paranoia to think they’re important enough to be watched) countries who do not participate in data sharing treaties are quite appealing.

CyberGhost is headquartered on Strada Baratiei in the historical center of Bucharest, Romania, a country that doesn’t participate in either the Quadripartite Pact (better known as Five Eyes or UKUSA) or SIGINT Seniors Europe (or SSEUR, better known as Fourteen Eyes).

Secure connection testing

CyberGhost offers the choice to select the country for your server and also allows you to request the best connection or specific servers in particular metropolitan regions.

The application also allows you to favorite servers at either the country or the specific server level, as well as servers that, for example, will allow you to watch movies from your Netflix account when traveling abroad.

I tested CyberGhost’s connections to Sweden, Taiwan, Australia, India, and Russia, but unfortunately, they do not offer connections to Russia. I also conducted DNS and WebRTC leak tests using DNSLeak.com, ipleak.net, and dnsleaktest.com. However, for more critical situations, it’s important to perform more extensive testing. Initially, it appeared that CyberGhost did not pass the dnsleak.com DNS leak test.

It’s important not to read too much into individual ISPs like Nobis. For a small VPN provider to provide worldwide service, they’re going to have to contract with ISPs all across the world to provide transmission services.

On the other hand, dnsleaktest.com immediately determined not only that I was using a VPN, but that the VPN was provided by CyberGhosLeak test

While none of the leak tests presented my home IP address, they did clearly indicate that I was using a VPN.

When connected to Australia, it looks like dnsleak.com was able to identify both that I was using a VPN and that I was originating from the United States. The report included both red blocks below:

Shields of CyberGhost

Protected by military-grade encryption, CyberGhost shields your digital footprint, ensuring anonymity as you navigate the vast landscape of the internet. With a fortress of servers across the globe, your online presence remains secure, your data encrypted, and your privacy preserved, allowing you to browse freely without fear of intrusion or surveillance.”

Ad blocking:

It includes ad blocking functionality. I’ll be honest; I have mixed feelings about ad blocking software. Operating any large service requires a lot of expense, and something has to pay for it. If users block all ads, there’s no revenue to cover servers, services, and salaries. However, CyberGhost takes an active approach: by blocking ads at the network level, it prevents malicious ads from ever touching a browser, ensuring a safer online experience.

Malicious website blocking:

It blocks access to malicious websites. Like ad blocking, this barrier operates at the network interface, not within the browser. Consequently, the browser is effectively shielded from encountering malicious sites, providing an added layer of protection.

Online footprint blocking:

It helps you be a ghost online. Your IP address is not the only way to track you. Websites often leave cookies and other hints to help them track where you’ve been. CyberGhost blocks those online footprints, so no website will ever know what other websites you’ve visited.

Force https redirect:

Similar to the widely acclaimed Https Everywhere plugin for Chrome, CyberGhost compels connections to websites through the secure https protocol. Although the Https Everywhere plugin can be added by desktop users, mobile and device users are deprived of this privilege. The capability of the network connection to enforce a secure link is an invaluable asset for such users.

Data compression:

CyberGhost compresses “images and other elements” to reduce bandwidth usage and keep costs under control.
